Is this a problem with commercial DVD movies or burned movies.
What symptoms are apparent when played back.

Are they backups of disks that you own or are they AVI files converted to DVD.
If they are converted from AVI, some converters will automatically produce a disk with the same video format as the source files.
This can be a problem if, for example, you are in North America (NTSC video format) and the source is PAL video format.

Backups from my friends so there is no region issue.
My dvd player is Sony, could that be the problem? Maybe it just doesn't play some backups.
I have tried different media so i don't think that's the problem.
I'm gonna try a few things. I'll let you know the results.
Wish me luck!

Plug the model number in and look at the remarks for that model to see if there are media issues.
If you burn at a moderate (4x) speed on quality ('Verbatim' brand)disks then you can eliminate that as problem.
The only other issue is the type of DVD media, DVD-R or DVD+R, some players spell out the type that they prefer.
