I have got a couple HD rips that are around 8GB each, they are all in .mkv file. Is there a way to transfer this onto a DVD9 so I can play them on my DVD player. Still keeping the 720presolution of course.

No, you can't. A DVD player will only play 480p, you cannot keep the 720p, HD resolution.
Yes, if you had a HD player, like Xbox360 or PS3 I guess you could put the video on a DL DVD and watch it.I am not sure where the 30 minutes are coming from...
