I've got a ps2 (SCPH-30004 PAL) which is modded, and it has stopped playing backups. I can still play original ps2/ps1 games, but not backups. when i insert a backup DVD (which used to work), it makes the usual 'reading' noise but suddenly gives a weird 'click' sound and eventually gives the red "please insert a ps2 formatted......" screen. This sound doesn't happen with the originals. But when i changed the disc read speed to fast today, it was able to play two backup games. The others still don't play. I hope this isn't a problem with the lens, cause it still plays originals normally. Oh yeah, the chip I've got is a fake, i just found out when i opened up the ps2. Do you guys think its a problem with the ps2, or the chip? If its the chip, can I replace it with a new chip?
PS - I heard that the chip 'burns out' if the ps2 is moved when playing games, and my ps2 has gotten moved a few times while playing, could this be the problem?

My ps2 stopped reading copied games it still reads the original but wen i insert a copy it just shows the red screen this never used 2 happen. i opened it up and tried adjusting the laser for hours and still no luck, at certain laser heights it would not go 2 the red screen it would just keep trying 2 read the disc but would not load... thats about as far as i could get it.
Thanks for the reply, so cleaning the lens + mirror underneath might do it? Cause i can play games on my ps2, but not backups.
Anyways do you know what type of alcohol and blower i should use?

i just finished cleaning the lens, used cleaning alcohol. I can play another backup game i couldn't play before, and i've noticed that games load a bit better, but still can't play the other backups, any ideas?

Ive opened it up again but i cant figure out how 2 clean under the lens as i dont have any air blower i mite try taking it apart even further.. btw did u clean both sides of the lens or just the top lens?

i don't have a blower thing either, i used a straw to blow under the lens (like in the youtube video) cause i didn't want to wait until i got a blower. I guess the cleaning isn't as effective, and you gotta be careful not to spit. Then i used some alcohol to rub the lens. It kinda works i guess. Games (original) load faster, and I've been able to play another fake i couldn't before. But i still can't play all the fakes. Hey, anybody think its the chip thats causing the problem????

Dude but seriously don't try to take apart the lens area, that thing is pretty easy to damage. Tell me if it works for you so i can try cleaning the lens again.

I have heard of adjusting the lens cogwheels but i havent tried it before so i cant give you any details.
I had no luck getting under the lense its 2 hard 2 reach, i did clean the top of it with alchohol thought but that didnt change anything...still cannot play backups and originals still work. Um as far as the cogwheel goes i spent a long time adjusting it i pretty much tried it on every click and it wouldnt load i found that at most points it gives the red screen ...then i got it to the point were it just says reading disc without going any further i left the cogwheel at that position..so i figure now its just having touble reading the copied discs.. wether it is the laser or chip i am unsure.
pjamd in ur case i dont think its the chip as that other fake game would not load if the chip was fried..is it on a different brand dvd then ur other games.. maybe the laser is starting 2 have trouble reading the lesser quality brands? im all out of ideas man
