Basically, what I mainly want to do with it is play SNES games, and maybe a PS1 game. Probably other stuff... But whatever.

What exactly do I need to do when I buy it? You can just give me links. I've looked around the forum, and I'm absolutely lost, and I feel incredibly stupid.

I'm sorry to ask this, since obviously the links are here and such, I just can't seem to grasp what I'm looking for.

I haven't gotten a PSP yet.
I guess it'll have whatever the latest firmware is in slim PSPs.

For that matter, just let me ask this:
Can any PSP be made to play homebrew stuff, despite it's firmware? That's all I'm really worried about. If there's a way, then I can just figure it out when I get it.

....and do any of the methods usually involve having to buy extra stuff? That's also a concern.

Try to buy a PSP at a shop that sells many consoles & portables.
Ask the shopkeeper whether he sells Modded PSP.
Or maybe he knows how to downgrade.
Ask for a downgrade & pay a little price.
Or if u don't want to spend that much money..
Do pandora battery.

Okay, say I just bought a brand new PSP from the store.

What is the first thing I do? Downgrade it? Install custom firmware?

What do I need with the PSP that I won't have, to do all of this?

I'm just really confused on the steps and stuff.

If you buy a Slim, you cant downgrade it, but you can install 3.90 M33 on it.

You'll need a spare battery and memory stick, there's plenty of guides.

So you can't do it without a spare battery and memory stick?

Also, yes, I know there's lots of guides! They're all jumbled together explaining different things in different order (or so it seems to my feeble little brain), and it just confuses the heck out of me.

Well, you can use the slim battery too.
But it's risky and i don't recommend u doing that.
Just get a spare batt like what CKhaleel said.

If you have to buy a battery just pick up a Datel. All the hard work is done for you and they're no more expensive than an official battery.
