PS2 Needs help!

I have noticed that my PS2 had been making noises like it was having problems searching the disc. Now it will not do anything but boot the menu and the browser screen says no data. When I have it open and close the door switches, I have no movement from the disc and no indication of life from the laser. Is the laser the problem with this? I have only had it just over 1 year. I would like to know the most likely problem before I spend the money and time on a new laser, which is the way I am currently leaning.

Which ps2 is it, fat or slim?

it is a slim scph-77001, and I would change the title if I knew how...read a couple that got closed for that reason after I posted, but don't know how to change it. And if I get it up and running again, now that it my PS2 has been violated, any good sites for info about upgrades and drawbacks (other than the great lifespan apparently)on this particular model?
