i can get connected by plugging the ethernet cord in both my pc and xbox 360 (pc to xbox straight through, no router). but i also hav a ps3 thats connected. i only have 1 ethernet port on the back of my pc. i was thinking of buying this, http://www.1topstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=95&products_id=7
for it to plug into my pc's usb port then running an ethernet cord from that to my xbox, would this work?? i want both ps3 and Xbox connected at the same time

to be honest i would just spend a little extra and get an ethernet card for your PC.

That way you have two ethernet ports on the PC whenever you need them.

One question i have is did you reset the network? If not that could be the reason it did not make a connection to Live. When i had mine plugged in with a cord i had to do a reset EVERY time i switch back and forth between the PC using the internet, and the Xbox using it. And the best way is directly connecting it to your modem, not your PC.

Try this: (first you must connect the Xbox directly to your modem which means taking out the cord that goes to the PC. And when you want internet on the PC you will hav to switch the cords back and unplug the modem again and reset)
Power cycle modem
1. Disconnect the power supply from the modem.
2. Press the power button to turn off the Xbox 360 console or the original Xbox console.

Leave all devices unplugged and turned off for at least three minutes.
3. Connect the power supply to turn the modem back on. Make sure that all the lights on the modem are illuminated according to the manufacturer?s specifications. For more information, see the documentation that was included with the modem.
4. Turn on the Xbox 360 console or the original Xbox console.

Or of course you could just buy a router for $50 and have 4 ports when you needed them.
