Hi
Just a quick question to anyone, i am just about to format my comp and was wondering what the best choice for the OS would be. I am currently running win xp pro
but was cosidering giving win 2000 a try anyone. Got any experience with win 2000? is it better than win xp or roughly the same? Any thoughts would be great

Thanx

Hiya Doofy,

If your PC is of reasonable spec, and you already have XP Pro, you might as well stick with it.

If you have a copy of Windows 2000 Pro available, then you could use it, it is perfectly acceptable (I personally prefer Windows 2000, I find it faster, cleaner, more stable - but then again I am a techie and my systems are very carefully configured).

One thing to watch out for if you are going to try Windows 2000: make sure you can get all the drivers you need BEFORE trying it, Windows 2000 is not as wide-ranging in its driver support as XP (some odd hardware is not supported).

Go with whatever you feel happiest with...

Have Fun...

I found Win 2000 to be slow and trouble some. I never tried Win 2000 Pro though and might be different. the boot on Win 2000 for me was always 5mins. I prefer WinXP, the boot same system is 1min. (long boot when on my network, off network for winxp is less than 1min). I though haven`t tried WinXPpro, I only have the home version. But my friends with the Pro version think it is the best and even gave up Redhat, because they liked WinXPpro so much.

I've got win XP pro. I must say I am very happy with it. Because I do a lot of gaming & DirectX 9 is excellent, having to change drivers regularly is also quite painless. I would recommend XP pro for it's RELATIVE stability & ease up system/software updates etc. Also overclocking is DEAD easy!

I use both OS'es and there is next to no difference between the two, other than looks. If you're interested in W2k Pro, set your XP theme to classic theme, it's almost identical to W2K.

The non global UofT version of Millenium was good, all the bad stuff was removed for you. Only problem I had was it didn`t reconize my soundcard at all, even close no matter what. So instead I got very loud feedback all the time. I hate when that happens.
But WinXP makes me almost, like Microsoft again. I did say almost.
