Quickest/Easiest way to make MKV file smaller?

I have an MKV file that will fit on a DVDR but after using MKV2VOB the mpeg is a little too big to fit on a DVD5. Therefore I want to make the MKV file a tad smaller. I'm not too fussed about having 5.1 sound but havent found any decent programs to simply change the sound.

Any suggestions?

The only way I know to get a smaller mkv file, would be to demux the file and recompress the video, then remux - I'm assuming that the video is AVI.

'MKVExtractGUI' to demux the .mkv file.

'AutoGK' to compress the AVI component to a custom size that you specify.

Remux the new xvid file with the original components (except the original AVI)using 'mkvmerge' (part of 'MKVToolnix').

Note that the 'MKVExtractGUI' folder should copied to the installed path of the 'MKVToolnix' folder (C:\Program Files\MKVToolnix)
