I am thinking of modding my 360, have really researched what i have to do but am a bit worried if i have researched the right drive. I havent opened up my box yet but i know i have an Hitachi drive due to the tray. Can some one comfirm to me when the 0079 drive came out, i do think i have the 0078 because my box was manufactured on 2006-10-04 and have read alot of people with 360 made at around the same time have the 0078.

It's nice to see someone who's searched before asking. We don't see a lot of that here in the 360 forum.
As for which drive you got, that's a tough call. Looking at the dvd drive database, your mfr. date is right between the 78 and 79. I see one listed as 10/4 and it's the 78. I also see a 10/5 with a 78, but there's another 10/5 with a 79. So the only way to be sure would be to open the case and look at the top of the drive.
Before you open the case, look up some vids or guides to save your warranty sticker. It's actually quite easy.
Also, you may want to edit you thread title, as the mods will surely close this thread once they see it.
