Is the Magic MS needed to do updates?

Is the Magic MS needed to do updates or can I just use a normal MS as the PSP already has Custom Firmware on?

I'm wanting to go from 3.71M33-4 to 3.90M33-3 so is it just a case of adding the 3.90M33 files to my normal MS and updating then using the 3.90M33-3 to go to that (no need to do 3.90M33-2)??

I've searched for this but cant seem to find the answer.

or to be more simpler. Reformat ur card with ur psp. Then follow this guide to upgrade to 3.90 M33.

u don't have to reformat ur memory stick. look at all my firmware updates of CFW in my signature. not once for any of them did i reformat my memory stick.

that was up to you not to reformat, i agree with mrgooey and always format your memory card before doing anything.
