I bought a scph-39001 chipped fat ps2 off craigslist, but what he failed to mention is that the dvd drive in the thing is in terrible shape. I've tried cleaning the lens and adjusting it, but after an hour and a half of tweaking the laser's angle I'm about to give up, as I can never get it to a point where it will read both ps2 and ps1 games and backups.
However, I have an unmodded ps2 with a drive that works great, so what I want to know is if it would be feasible to swap the dvd drives out (I should also mention I dont have much experience with electronic equipment)
Thanks in advance for any help, any advice will be appreciated.
Well, I just swapped out the laser unit from the working ps2 to the non working one, and now i'm hearing a clicking noise - would there be any problems moving a laser unit from one console to another?
yes. you must use the laser unit corresponding to the model number. if you swapped in another 39001 laser to the damaged 39001, then it should work. but any other model other than 39001 uses a different laser.
I put the original laser back into the console, and it's still having the same weird problems.
It boots up my ps2 games and a ps2 backup i have just fine, but if I put in a cd sometimes it will make a loud buzzing and scratching noise, (this also isn't always specific to the media type,
For example when I insert parasite eve (original copy) disc 1 it reads fine, but when I insert disc 2 i hear the loud buzzing and scratching noises. Any idea what might be wrong?
I don't know if the laser just needs replacing and is dying or what, but I find it especially strange that two almost competetely unscratched discs from the same copy of the same game produce such wildly different results.
I had the same problem, couple of weeks ago. When you open your system, youll see the white disc thing that picks up the disc in the dvd drive. Its directly in the centre of the dvd drive, its white and is clearly visible. It should be loose, you'll habve to unclip that, clean it and degrease it, but dont use polish, or anything, and then insert it back. Now it should play all types of disc. Usually, the problems of "disc read error" and the grinding noise happens if you polish your disc, never polish them, elbow grease is enough, dont use cleaning equipment on it, its the worst thing you can do, because the inner parts of the dvd drive become lubricated and it messes up the disc reading, good luck!
