I really could use some help!!! I'm trying to create my own home server with about three pc's. I have a few issue going on....

1. I cannot seem to create a bootable CD for server 2003, I have downloaded both the trial version which comes in 2 .iso files and I have my own copy which also came with two iso files. I can burn them to a disc with no problem but I cannot get the disc to be bootable, I tried adding the file microsoft corperation.img and it still didnt work as far as being bootable. The way in which I'm burning the CD is by dragging the iso files from ISO Buster into Nero and then burning it. Is this not the right way to do it. I also try extracting the files into the disc but I get an error everytime saying its copyright protected. I'm using Nero 7 essentials

2. Two of the pc's I'm using have a few issues, they are slightly older maybe about 4- 5 yrs, one often will power itself down after a certain amount of time and when it does, it sometimes will not power back on and I have to wait about 20 mins to try it again, not sure if its the power supply or what?? The other will not boot fro the CD rom drive, check the bios and its set to boot from CD first, check both the CDrom drives and the bootable XP disc and both work fine, the only other thing I could think of was that the bios is outdated, its a dell so I went to dells support site for a bios update and they have two for this specific pc but they are both for floppy and this pc has no floppy, will an external floppy get the job done as far as being able to boot from it?? I need to reformat the hard drive of this pc but thats the issue there??

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

No, that is not the way to do it. You need to burn the image file. if you burn it as a data disk it will not work. I had a problem burning XP SP3 with Nero. I then used ImgBurn to burn the image and it worked perfect. You may download that FREE program here: http://www.imgburn.com/ After you create the disk properly you should not have a problem.

This could very well be a heat issue. Open the computer case and blow all of the dust out with a can of compressed air. Then with the case open turn the system on and make sure that all fans are working properly. This may solve the problem and may not. You could get some new thermal paste and apply to the processor. Make sure not to put too much and be sure to clean off the old paste first. Antec Silver is one of the best. If you have not done this before, let me know and I will explain it to you. One other thing that you may need to do is to put an additional fan in the computer. In tower units I like to have one side fan, one fan in the front of the case to bring in air and two fans in the back of the case to pull the air out.

This will only work if the current BIOS allows for external devices. You may need to get a new CD or DVD drive. They are very cheap. A floppy disk you could purchase also for probably 5 bucks, it that is the way that you might want to go. It could be that the drive will not boot from the CD because you made it the wrong way. The other thing could be that the drive has just gone bad. It happens all the time.

I hope this information helps you.

Thanks a million, I really appreciate the help. In regards to the bootable server disc, that work, I now have a bootable copy.

I'm going to be trying the other two suggestions you made as well, thanks again and I'll let you know if that worked

xfactor09,
Not a problem at all. I'm hoping the problem with the one computer that was having constant shutdowns is because of a heat issue. If not then there are several other things that it could be. Let me know how it works.

If money's an issue use a soft brissle paint brush either an artists style brush (they come in all sizes) or what i do is use a std soft brissle brush from the local hardware store the width brush part if measuring the crimped area is 15mm wide, while the bit that sticks out of the crimp is 40mm long, that one brush pretty much does it all it's especially good at getting into the fins of the heat sinks, the real advantage is the dust sticks to the brush for removal, you can also use to it clean the mobo & surrounding metal parts of the case, remember you need a moderatley soft style brush i guess the best comparison would be horse hair, basicly the softer the better, then again the components seem relativley hardy.

EDIT: It also works well on cleaning the vents on the outside of the comp & power supply & the length can get the fans too

Thanks again, cleaning the fan didnt work but I did discoer that the fan is the problem its not spinning almost at all so of course the processor is getting way too hot and shutting itself down. So I'll have to get another fan that should solve the issue.

Also do you know where I can find a book or manual on MS server 2003, truth be told I've never installed it nor have I really ever worked with it, so natuarally when I was going through the install process there was some things it asked that I didnt know what to pick

Again the whole point here is I'm teaching mysel how to administer multiple pc's through server 2003. If your familiar with it and can give me some helpful tips I would appreciate it, if not again do you know where I can get a free book or manual? I know I need to get a hub, but can I just use my router for the pc's I'll admin from the system with server? These are just a few of the questions I have, I'm not even sure if I'm suppose to install the OS onto the workstation pc's from server or can those pc's already have XP on them and I just add them to the domain?

Thanks again for the help!!!

There are lots of different books available and many you may find that are used. The question you need to answer is:

What kind of server do I want to set up. There are file servers, application servers, Proxy servers, Web servers, FTP servers, etc.

I would probably set your server up as a Proxy server to start with. Basically you have two ethernet cards. One card is used for all computers connected to the network. You may channel these through a hub or a router. If you have wirless access to your router from any of the computers be sure to block all trafic from outside sources and only allow your computers access to the router. This will keep your router from being a hot spot for other wireless access from outside.

The second ethernet card will go to your modem. All incoming trafic will be given an IP address from the server and directed to the internet through the server. I would highly recommend ISA Management or a similar tool to act as a firewall for the network. You may find some information of Proxy servers and the types of Proxy's here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_servers

Here is a link to ISA Management download. You may read about it as well. There is a little setup involved but you may blacklist certain sites (keep the kids from looking a naked women!!), and you may set up certain ports to allow or deny traffic. You will see the resources it will allow you to do. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...&displaylang=en

Books may be found online with a search using google. Here is one I found: http://www.bookpool.com/sm/0782141307

I don't know if this will help or not, but this site offers some free training. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/default.mspx

I hope you can find a CPU fan for that processor. Because you are going to change that I would go ahead and remove the old thermal paste and apply the new Antec Silver I mentioned. Just make sure that you apply the correct amount. Too much could cause heat build up because of air pockets. You should slightly see a little of the processor under the paste. If you need a picture I'm sure that I could find you one.

I hope this information helps.

Ok thus far let me tell you what I have because I'm not sure what kind of server to setup.....

I already had a 4 port wireless router running with my DSL, I have my main pc, two other desktops which you know off as I explained earlier I having issue with and soon I'll have a laptop and one more desktop.

The issue of the one pc not booting from the CDrom drive still exist however I added a floppy drive and was finally able to reformat it and install XP not its fine, the other pc still has the cooling issue but I'm working on trying to get a fan for that one.

I just went out and bought a 5 port switch, I have a few extra network cables and I think thats all I need correct? Now again let me say I'm very very new to server so i dont know really what I'm doing, but what I want to learn and teach myself is how to administer the workstation pc's from my system with server on it.

I want to be able to install software, give internet access, etc... all from the main system with server down to my workstations much like in a company!!

With all that you would like to achieve I would suggest changing your dynamic DSL to a static DSL. I'm sure that you have the typical service that almost all home owners have. To give full control over the workstations that are set up on the server you will need this type of connction. Especially if you are going to run any form of Proxy.

When you get a static DSL connection you should get 5 IP addresses. These IP addresses are constant and do not change like they do with a dynamic connection. For the most part you may only use one of the 5 IP addresses that are assigned to you. However, you could use other IP addresses to branch out the network.

You will also need to network your computers by using static IP address. Here is a help article to explain it a little. http://compnetworking.about.com/od/worki...icipaddress.htm

Here is a little more explanation of a static IP that would be assigned by your provider. http://searchwindevelopment.techtarget.c...i520967,00.html

With a static IP address you may have multiple functions for your server. Now as far as running applications off the server from a workstation, there are only certain software that does that. You will have to physically install almost all applications on each workstation and I can tell you why.

For example:
Someone opens and runs Word off the server at workstation 1. Someone on workstation 2 needs to use Word but access is denied until the other person is through.

However, there are certain programs that are designed for servers for multiple workstations to use at the same time. You may do a search for them, but just remember up front that those programs are usually expensive. In fact most software for servers is very expensive, which is why I suggested using the server as the Proxy to allow or disallow internet access. You will need a strong anti-virus as well. I would suggest Kaspersky.

As you will learn as you go, companies have tech guys with administrative priviledges that install and remove items from workstations at the station. However, you may get VNC server set up and view each workstation, have full control over mouse and keyboard, and make changes if they need to be made. Also Windows has remote control on it that will allow you to do the same thing, it just doesn't serve as many features.
