The Problem:
(If you don?t want to read the background story regarding this topic (or you are more of a ?get to the point? type of person, then skip down to the ?My questions? portion of this topic.)
I have a NTSCPS2 and I wanted to play FFX-International (an import). However, because FFX-International is a Japanese region game, I cannot play it on my (North American/US) PS2.
I was aware that mod-chips could play imported games, but I didn't want to undergo that procedure. So through some research I found out about Swap Magic (a Mod-chip like CD software which, used in conjunction with a PS2, can play copied, back-upped, or imported games or DVDs). I did some more research. I haven't ordered any Swap Magic discs yet, because I wanted to make sure that that my particular version of PS2 was supported. I found out that my PS2 is a version 12 SCPH-70001. I also found out that the main difference between the SCPH-70001 PS2s and other slim-line PS2s was the warranty sticker located directly over one of the screw covers on the bottom and that the dial up modem was removed from the back (where the Ethernet connection is located for example). I looked at some websites and saw that the flip-top cover (made for the slim-line PS2s) was not on any of the compatibility lists with the SCPH-70001 series of PS2. My first question was, ?Why?? Was it because the warranty sticker covers one of the ?screw covers? on the bottom of the PS2? Well, I didn?t know. For your information, I bought my (slim) PS2 from a GameStop used, so I'm not really worried about the warranty.
My future questions regard the compatibility of the flip-top cover and ?slim tools? with the SCPH-70001 PS2.
My questions:
1. Assuming that I disregard the warranty, will the flip-top cover (made for the slim PS2 along with Swap Magic) work with the SCPH-70001 model of the PS2? If it does NOT work with that model of the PS2, why not and why is not on the compatibility lists on various Swap Magic sites (if any of you can provide links that could help me understand more regarding this, I would also appreciate it)?
I've also seen other tools called "slim tools" (plastic covers that "cover" the sensors which tell the PS2 that the cover is closed) that work with the slim PS2s as well. I?ve seen several different sets of ?slim tools? (for example, like part ?A?, ?B?, and ?C? or even up to ?E? in some sets; I figure this is probably because different sets work with different models of the PS2) and I also know that those don?t require the removal of the cover of the PS2.
2. Will the "slim tools" (along with Swap Magic) work with the SCPH-70001 model of the PS2? If so, which set of ?slim tools? should I get (please provide links if you can)?
If any of you see ANY discrepancies regarding the information in my post or think that I should post this in another board (I figured that this was more of a hardware issue than a software issue), please feel free to correct me and/or guide me to the right discussion board.
Thank you all for your time, help, and patience. I hope that my questions will help others in the future regarding this topic, especially with the SCPH-70001 PS2 in particular.
1. The flip-top is meant mainly for the Version 1-11 PS2 (or rather, the "big" or "fat" PS2). There are flip-tops for the "slim" PS2s, but they don't work as efficiently as the Magic tools (or "slim" tools). The reason they aren't in the compatibility lists is because the installation of the flip-tops require removing the PS2 cover, which could void the warranty.
2. Yes, the slim tools will work, but only if I get the right ones. Magic Keys 1 and 2 work with the V12 SCPH-70001. However, Magic Keys 1 work more efficiently (and look better) because they are made for the black-colored PS2 as opposed to Magic Keys 2, which are made for the silver or white "slim" PS2s.
More Question(s):
Now, my next (and hopefully last question) question would be, what is the most secure site to buy Magic Keys 1?
Thank you all for your time, help, and patience. I hope that my questions will help others in the future regarding this topic, especially with the SCPH-70001 PS2 in particular.
