dvd drive not opening

i was playing a game, when i accidentally hit the xbox and i got the red lights. since then the drive will click twice, and does nothing else.
i tried to manually open it and close it and no go. when i look on the xbox it says it's opening when it's not. i just replaced the motor and still a no go. did i ruin the firmware just by doin that?

It still has RROD?- when the drive doesn't oopen.

yep. so this is what i did.
I took the drive apart.
took off the card that is inside, and found it was covered with a bunch of goo that's all dried up.
I got a replacement drive(same kind, ms28) that has a bad laser
The new replacement ms28 didn't have any goo all over the place
I took the card out of ms28 with the bad laser, and put it into the drive that wouldn't open, and it opened up and running again.

The thing I can't figure out is how did all that goo spread out like that because now i gotta figure out how to flash the firmware for the new card since a buddy did it for me last year>=-(
