NOTE: I've tried using the search engine of the forum to find a similar condition to mine but to no avail, I found nothing. Please forgive my ignorance in this subject matter. I am new to the concept of backing up CDs. I also would like to say that my objective is just to create an image, not burning the images (because I'm quite sure my Yamaha CRW 2200E is not a 2 sheep burner).

Here's the status: I have Need for Speed: Underground and Grand Theft Auto 3 and I want to back them both up. Both are NOT pirated and legitimately purchased at my local retailer (in this case, electronic boutique). I recently found out about backing up games to keep the originals in a scratchless condition (pours a bit of alcoholic beverage in remembrance of my Half-Life CD, which has been scratched to oblivion). I educated myself by watching the video demonstration of backing up games using Alcohol 120% on TechTV's The Screen Savers ( http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/darktips/story/0,24330,3426623,00.html ) and reading "Backing up a protected CD - an Alcohol 120% guide by Aldaco12" ( http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/alcohol120guide.cfm ). At www.makeabackup.com, Grand Theft Auto 3 is listed as having a protection of Safedisc v2.51.021 and NFS: Underground as having a protection of Safedisc v2.90.040. In Aldaco12's guide, he recommended using ClonyXXL to determine the protection type used on CDs. ClonyXXL v.2.0.1.5 determined GTA 3 (both the Install and Play discs) to be using Safedisc v2.6. For NFS: Underground Disc 1, ClonyXXL could not determined the protection and for Disc 2, the Clony identified it to be using Safedisc v.2.9.

Let's get down to the skinny. I want to protect my investments (yes, they're games, but STILL investments nonetheless) so I used my knowledge from Aldaco12's guide and TechTV's video and for both games. Using Alcohol 120%, I could create the images for the Install disc of GTA 3 and Disc 1 of NFS: Underground flawlessly [using the Media Descriptor Image (.mds/.mdf) format]. When I try to create the images for the Play disc of GTA 3 and Disc 2 of NFS, I receive "Disc read errors: ####" (#### = various numbers; I'm guessing blocks). I basically need help with creating images of the latter discs so that I may burn them to use instead of my originals. Anyone with any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thank you for your time in reading all this crap to help me solve this problem.

If your using Alcohol 120% you will get all of those errors in the log. Thats normal for any safedisk 2.X disk. Alcohol worked for me with my "1 Sheep " burner as long as i had the program installed. I made variouse back ups of safedisk 2.9. I too got the errors but make sure when your burning it your using the same safedisk 2/3. I also tried this on my friends "1 sheep burner" and his burner had a lot more trouble reading the errors and nearly took an hour. You could try CloneCD or Blindwrite.
