I started using DVD Shrink 3.2 along with DVD Decrypter and DVDfab 4 about a week ago and was having no problems. But yesterday when I put in a DVD and tried to create the backup with DVD Shrink, it took two and a half hours to create the backup (a process which usually takes my computer about a half hour). At first I suspected it was something special about the DVD so I tried several others but all have had the same results. The process is averaging about 900 KB/second when I turn off the preview option. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Shrink and Fab, deleted all DVD files, done a disk cleanup and defragmented my hard drive, and have more than 50% free space on my hard drive. However, none of these actions have made the process any faster. Does anyone know what is going wrong and how to fix it?
PIO mode is enabled by default in the following situations:
...
For repeated DMA errors. Windows XP will turn off DMA mode for a device after encountering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more that six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only PIO mode on that device.
In this case, the user cannot turn on DMA for this device. The only option for the user who wants to enable DMA mode is to uninstall and reinstall the device/drive.
Windows XP downgrades the Ultra DMA transfer mode after receiving more than six CRC errors. Whenever possible, the operating system will step down one UDMA mode at a time.
SO:
If you can't manually set the drive for DMA made, try uninstalling the IDEchannel the drive is connected to (as suggested) and reboot when instructed to do so. The drive will be re-detected on reboot and should be set to operate in DMA mode by default.
If You can't enale DMA mode after trying the suggestions, it's possible a disk you're trying to backup has problems and is causing CRC errors to occur or the drive may be failing (lots of read errors).
