I've searched on the forums and I get back with themes that are under either .PTF or .CTF files. What are the differences?
And I heard that themes are firmware orientated, will it screw my PSP up if I upgrade etc?
Also, I read that some themes need to be flashed onto your PSP, that sounds risky, but are ALL themes like that?
I just want a theme that changes the texts, icons, wallpaper and the sound effects for the PSP only. Not really bothered about the starting-up screen and the closing down loading screen etc.
i think by what your saying, you might want to use the .ptf themes. They will only change the icons and the wallpaper.
the .ctf themes will change the whole layout of the psp and also the logo when it starts up. Basically, the whole xmb will be changed, but theres a way to do it without flashing the psp. Look up "cxmb without flashing" on youtube and theres bound to be a video guide.
hope it helps.
(P.S., .ptf themes don't need custom firmware, only .cft themes do.)

I've looked it up on youtube and it seems the plugins etc for cxmb are all firmware specific. Is that true?
And say if I was to update the firmware and the cxmb is not compatible, what will happen? Will I have to change to the default theme first and then update?
Edit: It seems that some of the ways shown on Youtube can still brick your PSP (read the comments there ><), is there ways of not bricking (guaranteed) with the themes? Don't mind having .CTF's now cause it actually looks sweet!
.ctf themes are unbrickable 100% as they run off the memory card and not the psps flash memory. its flash0 themes that can case a brick but even then it only causes a semi brick (you can access recovery mode to restore it) i have never had a brick and iv change my theme loads of times.
could i ask what fw you are on at the moment as you'll need cfw 3.71m33, 3.80m33 or 3.90m33 to run the latest cxmb.
to check the fw version go to settings -> system settings -> system information and then its should say system version: X.XX (where x is a integer)
if it is above 3.50 then you cant use the normal generic downgraders you'd have to use pandoras battery.
id just like to put as well that ctf theme you dont have as much freedom to mix and match when i say this i mean that you need to extract the theme then download another theme and copy the bits you want into the the extracted ctf theme and then convert it back to a ctf theme. thats is you want a front from one theme on another theme. where as flash0 themes you just copy the .rco file over to the correct folder in the flash0.
if that all sound confusing please tell me on what you are unsure on

Well, it kinda sounded bit confusing, but I assume that's when you wanna mix and match .ctf themes, like the different icons mixing with the different font etc.
My one is a 3.90 M33-3, however, even though I change my theme, of course in the future I would upgrade my firmware if it is stable, so when that happens, I want to make sure I know what I am doing etc. Such as will I have to change the theme to default and then update the firmware?
