My Wii has the following specs:
Wii S/N # LU10319637 8
Wii firmware version # 3.1U
Wii Key version 1.9g
Drive chip GC2-DMS (based on what's on WiiTracker)
Sorry for the long winded question, but I wanted to make sure I provided some background. Anyway, I have one of the original launch Wiis - I bought it on Black Friday 2006. I had the Wii Key installed last summer and have since played over a 100 different backup games. However, there are very specific games that don't work (see partial list below) - they get the *can't read disc* error. I've burned the discs from several PCs, using various brands of DVDs which work fine burning other games such as Spiderman, Speed Racer, Super Paper Mario, etc.
Mario Kart
Winter Games
Alvin and the Chip Munks
Need for Speed - Carbon
Indianapolis 500 Legends Wii Multigames - Pokemon Collection
However, I know the discs are good because my friend was able to play them in his Wii. We both have the same firmware on our Consoles and the same Wii Key version (v1.9g). The only difference is that he has a D2a drive, where as according to WiiTracker, I should have the DMS drive.
At first I thought it could be a dirty drive. However, if that were the case, I would expect it to be more random as to what does/doesn't work. In my case, if a game works, it never gets the infamous *can't read disc error*. Some of the games are slightly older games, so the firmware versions I have should be fine.
After updating my Wii Key to v1.9g, I was able to get Speed Racer to work. However, that didn't take care of the game that get the *can't read disc* error.
This is killing me, as I can't figure it out. My kids are going crazy because they want to play Mario Kart. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give.
I would start with updating your wii to the latest version, i beleive 3.2U, then updating your wiikey to 1.9s, then post back here if your still having problems.

If I burn a backup for my mate, his Wii won't play it even though it's 100% perfect in mine... and vice versa, so I wouldn't rule out there being something about the discs so easily.
Normally I would agree. However, I've successfully burned over 100 games with the same discs and DVD burner.
If it were the discs (or burner), why is it always the same games that have the problem? Also, I would have expected the problem to be more random if it were the discs. For example, I tried to burn Winter Games at least 10 times, and failed each time. At the same time, other backups such Speed Racer and Spiderman worked fine.
Just trying to ensure that the media wasn't being prematurely discounted...
Trying to thing around the problem now... are the problem discs scrubbed? All the same region as your Wii (or all different?) Can you think of anything that's common with the problem discs?
All but one of the games is for the US Region (NTSC format) and the Wii is also for the US Region.
In order to eliminate the discs, I've tried several brands...Shop4Tech, TDK, Kodak, HP and some other "no name" brand. SO far, TDK and Shop4tech work the best. Kodak was terrible. With regards to these games, they all had the same problem.
