I am a newbie, so please forgive.

I am trying to edit a demo reel with video recorded on my dvr unit. How do I get the material from my dvr into Final Cut Express? Tried burning a dvd of the material then ripping the dvd with Mac The Ripper. It did not work. What should I do?
