Why do magic markers make unreadable CD-R's readable?

hi folks had no idea where to post this , and not wanting to post such trivia elswhere here goes:

whenever i get a blank cd-r that my burner refuses to recognize, i run a black sharpie all the way around the edge of the disk and viola it burns reads etc.
WHY???
i read this somewhere thought it was a joke to make me feel foolish but tried it works everytime

trivial i know but the why is driving me nuts

I have only heard about one thing that might be related to that. Hackers would mark on certain parts of a copy protected cd that would cover up certain copy protection data. I doubt that has anything to do with your situation though.
