hiya all, wanting to edit avi's, clip frame to frame similar to videoredo but for avi's. i use avidemux to convert my youtube and google video flv files to avi and use videoredo to edit mpgs and dvds by the frame so just after a simple to use avi frame to frame editor (no loss of quality on output). cheers

VirtualDub allows simple frame editing and will save the edited file with a minimum of recompressing.

An example is if the file used XviD;after the required edits, you would choose 'Video' 'Full Processing' 'Smart Rendering' 'Compression' then choose 'XviD' (assuming that this codec is installed on the system).
'File' 'Save as AVI'.

good luck, I tried looking everywhere and tried many programs and could never find a "frame accurate" avi editor. All the ones I tried can only edit at the k-frames. Sometimes it's closed enough but for me it's not good enough.

Unfortunately how I do it is convert my avi to mpegs, use "videoredo" to edit, then convert back to avi. I loose a little quality but my edits come out perfect.

From everything I have read about editing avi's, it's just the nature of there structure that only allows splicing at k-frames. If you can find a "frame accurate" avi editor, I would be interested in testing it out also.

FWIW the latest VirtualDub explicitly states that (unless Direct Stream Copy is used)'Smart Rendering' ensures that the cut is made at the intended point - not at the 'k' frame.
The downside of course is that 'Full Compression' has to be selected - the upside is that only the area of the cut is re-compressed.
