can someone please link me to a place which explains how custom firmware works. everywhere i go just explains its history of where it all began, but no details of what it changes in the psp. i dont really care if its 'noob-unfriendly', i'll learn the terms if need be. thanxs

I dont know if this is the explenation your looking for but ill explain it in what it is.

CFW used to be two unencrypted firmware one of which was 1.50 because it was most stable for homebrew and the newest fw say 3.90 which is also unecrypted. what happens it that the two unecrypted fw are flashed to the internal flash drive of the psp.

with the slim though its only one unencrypted fw which will be the latest one.

not only are they unecrypted to allow homebrew they are also modified to allow isos to be loaded and there to be a recovery mode

thats what it is basicly if you want a full on explination then got to wikipedia and search custom firmware it should be basicly the same as what i said but a bit more in depth than mine.

hope that helps

custom firmware is reverse engineered official firmware. it allows unsigned code to be run, because the modified firmware sees any eboot/iso/cso as digitally signed by sony.

the original OE firmware kept the 1.50 kernel, while allowing to update to the recent firmware. DAX removed unnecessary things to make space for the 1.50 kernel. that way, you can run all homebrews, while still able to play the most recent games.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .
