If I back up a copy of 3.8 will it boot with a genuine copy of 3.6 and will I be able to use the coder?

Yes it will boot with a genuine 3.6, but I have no idea if the codes will work, never tried it.
You will have to try it out. Let us know.
I have the SM 3.8 coder DVD ISO if you need it. Its in my profile page, under links, PS2/MY Folder

I've tried it a few ways before and It hasnt worked,
I'll try downloading your ISO, the one I downloaded was probably different,
I got up to the codes screen and everything but when I went to boot it went to disc reading screen
So.. I'll download yours when I have the time
