I do a fair amount of RROD repairs using the X clamp replacement method, butI'm stuck with this one. I got it off ebay, and it is suffering from the RROD, and it was still using the original X clamps. Theoretically I should be able to fix it, but when I opened the case I found what looks like soda on the motherboard. Its around the cpu/gpu and it looks like it also spread out a bit. When doing the repair I tried to clean it the best I could with alcohol, but I wasn't able to get the worst of it off. With a visual inspection however, I do not see any corrosion anywhere. Anyhow, I did the fix, and after booting it up and waiting for it to overheat I waited about 30 min and the I felt the heatsinks because it was not overheating, and the heatsinks hadn't heated up at all. This means that the CPU/GPU aren't running. Has anyone encountered this before? Or does anyone have any reccommendations as far as what I could try next? Thanks.

It's probably broken traces on the mobo. Check the back where the old clamps were taken off to make sure they didn't slip and cut traces.

Could have been the soda damaging it too.

Just try whatever you know, and if theres nothing else you could always re sell it on ebay as is. :]

Yeah this is kinda what I figured. I just thought maybe someone had seen the symptoms before and maybe I could narrow it down. Anyhow, I'll probably just fleabay it anyway.

You said you couldn't get the worst of the grease off. Well, you gotta get that off because 1 of the reason the xclamp fix works is because cleaning that gunk. Patience and the die should be mirror clean.

Thanks, but the dies were definitely mirror clean. Like I said, I did the RROD fix as I usually do. The "soda" or whatever it is is all around the CPU, GPU, and then spread on the rest of the board. It isn't thermal paste. It almost looks like honey. It's sticky and thick.

Thanks though
