Hi all, I'm wanting to update to the latest firmware so I can go on Xbox Live, I was just wondering, do I need my original firmware?

Yeah, you need to extract your key from orginal, or the FW that's in your drive now. Just download it to PC and extract key, put in new FW and flash.

So, Original or the FW on drive now is where you will find the key.
