Popped a chip off of motherboard while performing the X-Clamp fix ...

Does anybody know what this piece is for?
While performing the X Clamp fix - i was trying to carefully ease the x clamps from the mother board when the screw driver slipped and plucked this chip off (didnt know u could just rip them off with pliers)...
well i continued with the fix and the 360 seems to be working fine; but does anyone know what this chip is for?
also how important is the arctic silver thermal compound? not knowing what it was - i went to Lowes Hardware store and walked up to a group of about 8 associates and asked them where it was - they all shugged and called over another guy - he pushes his way through the crowd - asks what i was looking for then told me it doesnt exist ... is this important?

i am most likely wrong, but that looks like it was a resistor, however i could be wrong. thermal compound is key to what you are doing before you turn that thing on again write us back and let us know what compound you used. artic silver is just a name brand of a compund that is highly recommended. however most any will do.

You're not going to find it Lowes. Go to Radio Shack. Running your 360 without thermal compound is exactly like driving your car without radiator fluid.
Oh yea... solder that resistor back on. It's there for a reason. If you can't do it, take it to an electronics repair shop. It wouldn't take but a minute to solder it back on... as long as you didn't lift the pad.

Yeah thats a Capacitor. You can get them pretty cheap on ebay. Radio shack may have them.

thanks for the quick replies ...
so the thermal compound IS a necessity ... i'll head over to radioshack today hopefully they have Arctic Silver ...
ill try to reattach the capacitor i plucked off while im at it ... however, its missing a lead (or leg - i forget what they are called) so if i take it to Radioshack - would they give me a similar one or do i have to search for 360's motherboard specs and find out exactly what the capacitor is ... basically is there anything specific i need to know about it before i go in - or can i jus say "hey i need this capacitor."?
and is there any particular kind of solder i need - does it matter?

they should have thermal compound, any will do and read instructions on how to put it on.

this is a good link with detailed pictures, make sure you follow the thermal compound process in the link i sent you step by setp. EXACTLY. and my guess is you could get a new resistor, but if you are asking what kind of solder to get then you shouldnt be soldering anything.

thanks homesick ... this will definitely come in handy!
so is that piece a capacitor or a resistor?
as for the solder - i know a little about soldering - failed a electronics class in 9th grade (about 14 years ago) lol ... but i do remember there was good solder and bad solder, one (for lack of remembering the terminology) "oiled" more than others ... cant remember what the good stuff was ...

like i said with your knowledge do not attempt to do that, take it to a local electronics shop, and i am pretty sure that is a resistor.

It is a ceramic chip capacitor. I sell them by the millions. Take the board to radio shack and match up the cap you need if you are planning on doing it yourself. (Not 100% if they have them) Find a friend to put it on for you. if you still have the one you popped off you can most likley get it put back on.

thanks all ...
ordered the Arctic Silver 5 from eBay - grabbed a Talismoon fan while i was at it ...
i'll see if radio shack has a "ceramic chip cap" ... thanks for the advice and i think i'll try to solder the piece on the mobo - im either hard headed or just that doit urself type of person ... i just cant bring my self to pay some1 to do something i think i can do myself ... soldering is easy as long as u have patience and a steady hand ... only reason why i failed that electronics class was because i was getting suspended almost every other week lol ... sometime this week i'll pick up a 15 watt iron, tin, braid and whatever type of solder radio shack recommends and report back ...

ok ... been over a week since i did the x-clamp fix ...
got the talismoon fan in - and dropped a few Arctic Silver drops on the cpu/gpu ...
as for the capacitor - i found the 360's BOM here:

and figure it was either a Ceramic Multilayer Capacitor X5R/X7R or C0G/NP0 ... went to all the local parts stores that i know and could find anything even resembling this cap nor could i find it online ... so i jus sealed it up and been playing it for a few hours throughout the week ... its running fine - nothing seems to be off with the system and it doesnt seem to be abnormally hot either ...
i guess i lucked up and the cap wasnt too crucial to the operation?
