So far I've backed up with complete success several DVD's so I don't believe that my equipment or media is at fault. However, I got about 20 minutes into FC and it pixelated like a Mo-Fo and went to crap from there. So I looked at the original and the DVD itself has what appears to be a large ovualr stain running unevenly acrossed it's surface. The Original plays fine. My question is, would this defect f-up the process of the rip and/or the iso burn?

I would simply like to know before I try a re-rip and waste another disc and more of my time. I could easily back-up the first edition if I wanted too. Thanks all.

What software have you been using? The more we know, the more we can help.

If you haven't tried it I would suggest using DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD then use either DVD Shrink (freeware) or DVD2One to compress the files.

DVD Decrypter is very good at ripping DVDs that other progs have trouble with.

I've been using AutoShrink ISO. It's a GUI that uses DVD Shrink to rip and its own program to make an ISO and then it has an option of using DVD Decrypter to burn. Perhaps I should rip with DVD Devrypter then go thru the motions with DVD Shrink and AutoShrinkISO?
BTW I have a P4 with a Plextor PX-708A

PS- Would I have to make an ISO out of DVD Decrypter before I send it thru DVD Shrink? Thanks.

Answered my own question about the ISo out of DVD Decrytper, however, I got some message in Decrypter about having to change my drive region RCE blah blah, which I did now I have 4 left. This never happened to me before. Is there a setting in preferences I need to set? Will DVD Region Free take care of this problem next time or is it a fluke?

I've taken a look at my most recent backups and oddly enough it looks as though the first half of the burn was deeper(?) then then rest of the burn is not so dark. I'm using my Plextor PX-708A on max on the burn which means it burns at whatever speed it thinks it can. I am going to try and set it at a certain burn speed so that it doesn't go from 4x to 6x to 8x then back to 4x bcause thats what I've seen it indicate that its doing. I'm thinking the discs I have may not entirely support random write speeds. Does that sound feasible enough? Anyone? Thanks

I haven't tried Memorex discs with my 708. I used the supplied disc (Taiyo Yuden +R) and some TDK (Ricoh 4X +R) with excellent results at full speed. If I remember correctly the PX-708 uses two recording zones which may explain the difference in color.

It's possible you just got a bum disc and it's also possible that the Memorex 4X +Rs aren't very good for recording above 4X. It might do well to try it again at 4X and see if that doesn't solve your problem.

Thanks. Thats what I finally figured out. I went and re-recorded at 2.4X. I figured it was probably that the media couldn't handle the varying speeds above 4X. So far they seem to play OK and I don't have those rings.

Good deal! I wondered if that may be it.

Plextor's website lists only a specific few discs that are 8X compatible at the present, but most manufacturers will be putting 8X discs soon.
