I have tmpgenc xpress. I record from cam to dvd with a standalone dvd recorder, then i copy the files over to my computer, and convert to mpeg using tmpgenc. The problem is that a 40 min video will still be a gig. I want to be able to put 5 vids on one single layer disc. I use sony dvd architect to author as far as creating my menu, adding music etc.

Is there a way I can further compress these mpegs so that I can fir them on a disc that way?

You will have to encode with lower bit rate.
TMPGEnc Xpress has a bar in encoding window where you can see the size of the output file regards to bit rate which you can set.
If you have five files the total output should be about 4GB so you can author some menus to it.
If the file is too big, usualy authoring or burning software will compress it further to fit to DVD size you choose.
I would use Xpress to do that because it does better job.

i tried. i usually keep them at 4,000 because i lose too much going further down. i just put all the files with the menu. it comes to 7.3gb. what i'm gonna do after it's finished is use dvd shrink to see if it can bring i back down to 4.3gb

It really does not matter what you use to compress them. If they are 7.3GB and you want to get 4.3 out of them, than bitrate will be much lower than 4000.
You can check this with Bitrate Calculator.
If you try to re author with Shrink you will loose all the menus.

Shrink remove menus only in Re-authoring mode, otherwise it will only compress what you have.
