Replaces ms28 not working

I have a 360 that originally had an ms28 in it. I messed up and figured i'll just buy another ms28. it's never been flashed, but it will only play movies, and no games @ all. is there something that I have to do to get the drive reading the original games?

You usually need to get the original firmware from your old drive because it contains the drive key and flash it to the new drive. It does not have to be the original firmware just a working firmware you had on the old. The drive key is not interchangeable and is sepecific to the 360 motherboard.

the problem was that the discs weren't working on the old drive either. I hope i'm not screwed on this

Ahh, so was the old one flashed before you got it? Or had you attempted to flash it or anything? I know the new one will definatly not have the right key on it if you have not put it on yourself, and this will be causing your problems.

nope i flashed it myself. everything went through fine with iprep. i opened up the firmware in firmware toolbox, and it said it was ixtreme 1.4 12x.

you my friend have dont a bad flash and i am assuming your old drive is fine, you just need to re-flash it the right way.

Did you patch the key into the old driver properly? I read some where people had problems with iprep not loading the key from the original firmware or making floppies that dont work, so i used the mtkflash command method and patched the key with the dos application that comes with ixtreme. Never used iprep tbh.....

i don't think i patched the key. matter of fact i don't think i did anything with a key. all i did was format my stick to mtkflash, then ran the dsam and fsam and backed up my fw afterwards.

Okay, so when you ran the dsam command somewhere on the floppy/usb pen you should have saved the original firmware. This is the firmware that contains the key. If you have this firmware you are safe!
You need to find it and use the patcher that comes with ixtreme 1.4. You copy the original .BIN file to the same folder as the ixtreme firmware on your pc and run the patcher's DOS command.
This will then generate a third bin file for you to copy to your USB/floppy (take note of its name or rename it and replace the firmware iprep put on there) and write this to the drive using the fsam command. This should then put they key onto your drive and everything should be ok.

ok so i did the patcher dos command. now although i did fsam once already, i can do it again right? second, do I put the hacked bin on the root, or in the backup folder

ok i did that and still a no go. I ran the dos and it named the new orig.bin to Ix14.bin. I put it in the root of the memory stick then ran fsam. everything updated ok but the games still not playing. is there something that i'm missing?

Open your original firmware in firmware tool box or somethign similar and check the key is present. Now open the ix14 firmware you created and check it is the same.
If there is no key in the ix14 firmware you will need to rename the original firmware to orig.bin for the patcher to find and use it. Make sure it is in the same folder as the make ixtreme firmware command. Then you will generate a new firmware called ix14.bin. Use IPREP to make a new floppy with only this firmware on to save confusuion and write this to the drive.

Good help gavcarter is providing.
I know when auto key patcher came out, there were still some suspicions of whetherr is will inject right key to right place every instance. So check the key using hex editor after you use the automatic program. Or you can even manually copy paste the key using hexedit.
