First off, I've been reading this site for what seems like forever. Using it to answer all my questions and just learning about things that interested me. Reading every tutorial on how to convert this to that and how to make my DVD player region free. Until now, most of my AV questions were answered by this site. And if they weren't it was because Google already had the answer. However here I am with a problem that I can't seem to solve. I just bought the Sony HT-SS2000 HTIB system and I wanted to hook it up to my DVD Player (Philips DVP5960) to watch upconverted DVD's and to my laptop (Sony VGN-FZ290) so I could watch HD videos. Since both my laptop and DVD plater have HDMI out ports and the HTIB system has three HDMI in ports, I figured this would work fine. However for some reason, I can only get audio or video to output out of the receiver. Meaning if the receiver is sending a video signal to the TV, I wont have any audio coming from 5.1 speakers. If I turn the TV off, then the receiver sends out audio through the system. My TV is a Panasonic PT-53WX54. The TV only has DVI so I'm running an HDMI cable to the TV with the help of a separate HDMI-DVI adapter. When I hook it up to my laptop and its sending a video signal, my sound card doesn't even see the HDMI audio as an option. When I stop sending the video signal, the audio option shows up. Its really strange. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I dont know if this qualifies as a video problem since its also an audio problem so move or delete accordingly. Thanks.

as far as i know i dont think u will get 5-1 sound out of tv,u could try adding phono leads for audio as i presume no optical or digital out available, hdmi will only work on top end amp to give you audio and video thru single cable.

He would still have audio through his front speakers wouldn't he? I am on a budget and have been looking at getting new speakers and receivers. I was looking at the Pioneer VS-918V and the Onkyo TX-SR606. Does this mean that the HDMI inputs would transfer video through the HDMI output but, not play any sound at all for the receiver?

CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz, 1333FSB
Motherboard : Gigabyte G41M-ES2L
GPU : 8800 GT OC 512 mb Ram
RAM : 4GB RAM OS : XP Pro
Hard Drive : Two WD 1TB 64MB 7200RPM SATA3 (WD1002FAEX)

Its actually strange. I ended up getting my DVD player to output 5.1 audio AND video simultaneously through HDMI. however, my laptop will only give out one or the other.

Ah, that makes more sense to me. Perhaps a hardware or software problem. What is you OS and your video card on the laptop?

Wish I could help you but I am not sure what the problem could be. I had an issue after removing my DVR to get my vcr to send the standard cable audio to my receiver, the video goes though. I still need to play with that though.
