I just did my first xbox-1 softmod about three weeks ago and it went great (hotswap method). Now I have 3 xboxes (with said mod) and put them in my daughters room. I replaced the harddrives in all of them (with 500GB, 160GB, 160GB), installed xbmc, bought cheap belkin routers, and turned them into bridges using ddwrt, so now my kids can stream their favorite movies off my NAS, and have a bunch of games local.
This is where I am coming from, so now I wanted to try PS2. I went to gamestop and they have fat, slim. The guy is nice enough to open boxes and let me look at labels so I can get the conole version I want. That being said, which PS2 would be the best recommendation? Ultimately I would like to do it without having to purchase anything additional (chips, etc). I am willing to open the console and change out internal parts if need be. Soldering as long as it isn't too small. I am not opposed to buying a chip, but would like to try a soft method first. From what I have read through the many postings, there seems to exist a method where you can burn something called usb-advance-cracked, and play games off an external usb drive.
Does anyone have a FAQ on PS2 console versions, pictures with how to identify them, and their mod-ability?
Not sure what you are looking to do but if its just soft mod a ps2 then IMO the fat ps2 with mc exploit and flip top is the way to go. At least as far as not having to order anything special. Again that is just my opinion.
