I'm trying to rip my first DVD using the tutorial here:
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2divx_anamorphic.cfm

A couple of the programs crashed once or twice but patience paid off. I got through to VirtualDub and am now left with the 1st & 2nd Pass AVI files. I would assume that VDub would merge them but I see nothing specific about that in the tutorial.

So, what did I do wrong? I've got two AVIs that won't play independently and need to do a merge somehow.

All advice appreciated.

If you did everything right, the second pass AVI file is your final result! (the first pass AVI is just an intermediate step used to produce the second pass one). Check it out, make sure it looks and sounds OK, and if so, you're done! You can now throw away everything except that one second pass AVI - all those vobs, wavs, mp3s, etc. etc.

If, however, this second pass AVI is _not_ OK.. well, something went wrong. :-) Back to the drawing board!

OK, I'm retrying. I have the VOBs on the HD and I was just taking DVTool's word for it when it told me the length (thus affecting the kb/s). I played each VOB and added up the lengths to get the right full-length of the film. The original 2ndPass avi was unplayable probably because of that. I'm redoing it all today and VDub is working on the 1stPass right now.
