I know that it's possible to play games using an external USB hard drive and a program called HDLoader, but I'd like to know if I can run games from the hard drive on my laptop using either USB or a LAN cable. I'd imagine that, if possible, I would have to apportion a section of the disc and have it reformatted. My PS2 is a 77001 and a mod is pending right now.

(I know this addendum probably belongs in the hardware boot section, but I already tried that) But unless I can get some help with my primary issue all that about hard drives and such is moot. After a (second or third) mod chip install attempt, I've got no A/V coming from my unit. The light turns green, the disc doesn't spin. I scanned the board intensely for shorts, I mean really looking and cleaning off solder with copper wick, not just a once-over maybe a thirty-over, and found nothing. I checked the fuses (that I could find) with a multimeter and those all checked out. So my next step is to do another thirty-over and thorough desoldering of everything and find a fuse diagram for my version. Any other ideas. Dead, perhaps?

But seriously, even if you can't help me fix my PS2 I'd still like to know about the hard drive booting, thanks.

Well, first you would use either USBExtreme or USBAdvacne with a USB hard drive. HDLoader is only for internally installed hard drives.

Second, the compatibility with USB hdds is pretty much horrible. I have two games that I play on my USB. There are a few more that can run, but the movies are WAY to slow and choppy. Then there are a ton more that just won't run at all.

LAN cable, no, not that I have found in my research. A USB, you would still run into the compatibility issues that I mentioned earlier. Besides that I don't think it would work anyway. I don't know of any way to make this work normally with any of my systems, so I don't see it working for the PS2.
