Verbatim has announced that "it is on schedule to deliver industry's first Double-Layer DVD+R (DVD+R DL) discs". The first 8.5 GB DVD+R9 media should ship this spring and will be 2.4x speed discs according to Verbatim.

The first recording layer of the Verbatim DVD+R DL disc is semi-transparent, providing enough reflectivity for writing/reading data on the first layer, yet transmitting enough laser power to read/write on the second layer by refocusing the laser. In addition to optimizing layer reflectivity, new Metal Azo recording dyes were developed by MKM for each layer to optimize parameters such as signal amplitudes and power margins and ensure full compatibility with current DVD standards.

"Compatibility was a top priority in developing our Double-Layer media," said Tim Clatterbuck, Verbatim Director of Optical Storage Marketing. "Content developers will be among the first to make the switch to Double-Layer technology because multimedia and video files require so much capacity. They can increase their productivity with the 8.5GB DVD+R media without worrying about playback compatibility. It will be the same as their 4.7GB discs, just more capacity."

BenQ/Philips and Sony have been rumored to launch dual layer burners as early as in April so hopefully we will be able to burn DVD+R9 discs before the summer. You can find the whole press release from Verbatim

This will mean 2 movies on 1 disk for me. Will cut down on storage space dramtaically for me. There will be some dead cheap 4.7g media about, which is even better news.

I just posted the article for general information. 8.5 gig may not let you do a 1 to 1 copy, but compression will be about 10% on full disc. But you can guess at the cost of the burners and media. We'll have to see what the future brings. Now if the burner companies come up with firmware updates for most burners, that will help.

Thanks for the informative post, Jerry. I guess I'll hold off on that 8X Plexor.
A person will have to choose between little or no compression, expensive media or the fun of an 8X burn.

Maybe wait for 8X DVD+R9??

Hi Frank, how's it going. I'm waiting for a smart overseas company to make a burner with a built in system for decrypting. Like the GO VIDEO dual deck VCR that was out a few years ago. Now that would be a nice system. 2 dvd drives next to each other. Pop in a movie on one side, copy comes out the other. Auto compression if needed, no added warning screen. Do you think the movie companies would complain a little?
