SONY16D1 Doesn't Work with Pioneer 111D

I just burned 5 coasters in a row with these older SONY16D1 DVD-R version 2.1 discs. I bought these last year and they have been sitting here until yesterday when I ran out of CMC mags.
The burn fails at around 56%-62% and once at finalization. I burned about 98 CMC Mags- Maxell right before all this with no coasters. I have used SONYs with this burner before and they were all fine. I even tried a SONY DVD+R and it worked fine. I'm sure this is a media burner incompatibility issue. I have the latest FW.
What's going on here with this media and burner?

After another week of trying I have trashed about 7 of these Sony Discs, they simply refuse to burn past 60%. I don't know what the hell is going on. From the same batch and time frame I burned ONE successfully, then all bad.
I have burned many many SONY DVD-R 16X with the same burner/program/FW/Setting... now I don't know if I should buy more Sony DVD-Rs since the Pioneer drive is my main drive.
Very Puzzling, and it's a Pioneer drive too, so no excuses.

Well in order to go further into your problem, I think you should share with us some information.
First of all, are you always burning the same amount of data in the disc? or even if you burn 1GB or 4GB you get the same problem at 60%?
Have you tried using another brand of discs just for testing if the work on your burner?
What program are you using to burn, have you tried burning with other programs?
Have you discarded the usual culprits in this cases? DMA enabled, any conflict with any software, good cable, high burning speed, etc?
as you say it is very puzzling, because Ive always used sony and they have worked flawless in different burners. But should not always blame the media, it may be possible that something within your software is the culprit of this problem

I myself would simply use DVD+R Sonys. Appears your burner likes them fine. I ONLY use DVD+R media myself.(Verbs & Sonys) On occasion I will burn a DVD-R for a friend that has an old, picky player. But I can say that percentage wise, I have definitely seen more issues with DVD-R than DVD+R.

Yeah I agree, there are major advantages in use + format.
This burner has burned about 500+ discs of MOSTLY Sony DVD-R and DVD+R discs with no issues. The software used to burn these discs are the same 2 software, no changes. The burner is in fine condition since I burned CMC MAGS as backup in same time frame when these Sony DVD-R failed. Even burned a Sony DVD+R to further make sure that it wasn't solely burner issue.
About same amount of data burn - full DVD and fail at 60%.
I gave up on a solution so I just switched roles or drives. I let another burner -Sony one- do the burning of these discs and it has been fine. SO I think it's a disc burner compat issue.

I had problem with both SONY 16X -R and 16X +R. on Pioneer DVR 111.
I have about 30% coasters, I help a litle if I burn at speed 4X :-( .
Never have problem with Prodisc -R 16X, Ritek -R 16X and TY -R 16X on the same Pioneer DVR 111.
Never SONY again.

Sony makes Excellent Media. However, not all burners are alike & there will be some media a specific burner isn't compatible with.
Myself, I use ONLY LG Burners & readers. I have not seen ANY media they won't read or write as long as my firmware is current. No experience with Pioneer. Whatever works best with your drives, use them. BTW, I have a couple of LG Burners with over 1000 burns and stll work good as new. They make Great Drives IMHO.
From what I have read here , Benq & Lite On are decent too. Sony drives are rebadged Lite Ons.

The burners aren't the only problem; The disc quality has dropped/lack of more compatiable Firmware for -R Media. Pioneer's tend to have some quirks in their burners are finicky(Even thou they use a Nec chip).
I use Nec(3500A)/MadDog (16DVD9),Plextor PX-740/Benq 1640, LiteOn: 20A1P, 20A3P, & 20A4P's. Sometimes it takes different burners for different medias. Then there is always software (I have old, new, free and paid)? Gotta Experiment!

pioneer burner might also be dieing.had same problem with my pioneer so got a Lite-on and no problems ever since.
