Hi, all. I wanted to ask if it is possible to use the Wii Semi-Brick disc (aka "wii-system-menu-update-USA-V289-repad") by itself on my modded wii sytem so that I can play original copies of "Super Mario Galaxy" & "Super Smash Bros. Brawl"?
Or do I have to use it in conjunction with the 1.9s/g update disc?
Moreover, is using the Wii Semi-Brick (aka "wii-system-menu-update-USA-V289-repad") disc by itself safe to install on my modded wii? (I am currently updated to "2.2" US-NTCS).

The thing is I do not know what mod-chip I have in my system (I don't know how to properly open my modded system) and I would like to play my original copies of "S.M.Galaxy" & "S.S.B.Brawl".

Bottom line: I would like to play my new/original "Super" wii games and still want to play all my old backed-up wii copies also.

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Is your wii semi bricked ? You don't say it is, so why would you want to use a semi brick fix disc ?

Your wii is really on 2.2 or is that a typo ?

If you don't know what chip you have then open it up and take a look, we can't tell you what it is.

Hi, ggbarnum & thanks for acknowledging my question(s).

In response ...

No, my wii is not bricked nor semi-bricked. I heard that a wii system has to be updated to at least a 3.2 to play "SMGalaxy" & "SSBBrawl" and the Wii-Semi-Brick disc can supposedly update a modded wii to version 3.2. (Can you confirm this?)

Yes, my modded wii is presently at version 2.2 (not a typo). I have not used my modded wii for quite a while. I recently graduated and got a couple of original wii games as gifts and wanted to play them. I heard horror stories of bricked/semi-bricked systems if one were to update beyond version 2.2 if you had a chip installed. As a result, I placed my wii aside for about half a year just to play it safe.

As for opening my system - I am all butterfingers when in comes to opening and installing mod-chips. I bought the modded wii over a year ago from a friend of a friend.

Yes you would need 3.2 to play new games but to update your wii you can just use any new game disc containing the update as long as it is from the same region as your wii or do it over an internet connection. You don't need any special program to do it.

However, it sounds like you will have an old mod chip which would not work with updated wii firmware so you would need to update the chip also.

You really need to know what chip it is, to find out if it can be updated at all and if so, how, or if you need to replace it with a newer chip.

So you really need to open it up and take a picture of it so someone can tell you what it is.

Thanks for the response, ggbarnum.

Can I update to a 3.2 with my original copies of "SMGalaxy" and/or "SSBBrawl"? If so, will the 3.2 update (semi-)brick or render my mod-chip useless after said update? I also have Wii-VC games via the twilight hack and I don't want to lose them with the update.

Or was it "Mario Kart Wii" that screws up wii systems with mod-chips & the twilight hack? What's the word on that?

There is a new version of the Twighlight hack so that will work whatever firmware your wii has.

If you update your wii firmware your mod chip may stop working and require updating also. But as I already said, unless you know what mod chip you have there is no way of knowing what you need to do.

Find out what chip you have.

I may be confused here. But if a new game comes out in the future with "3.4" firmware update, can't you just use Brickblocker to remove the update and proceed to play it on a 3.3 Wii? Or will the game actually not load if the firmware on the wii is not "3.4?"
