What I mean is, what if you couldn't dl movies, music, software, etc illegally on the internet. If it was as hard/risky as doing it in the real world. Do you think that would have an affect on businesses like ISPs, P2P/Torrent site traffic, etc?

Personally, I think ISPs would instantly see a massive decrease in all of their high data rate plans. I think most people would be happy with a connection that was fast enough to stream youtube clips.

My isp (bellsouth) has basically tripled my max download speed for free over the past year. However, the only thing I use the extra bandwidth for is continuing to run torrents and P2P programs while I play on xbox live. If it wasn't for that, I really wouldn't have seen any real improvements in any way at all. Even for legal downloads, with the old super slow service I could still DL a song in like 1-2 minutes so its not like the old version was unbearable.

If torrents couldn't hold illegal content, would people even use them? I mean, I guess educational institutions who use them and maybe scientists or something would still use them to share data, but would the regular person have any use for torrents if they couldn't illegally DL games, movies, software and music with ease?

I would expect to see a large numbers of isp's lose massive amounts of customers as we all switch over to the free stolen and uncontrolled darknet.

It is our internet.. it doesn't belong to anybody in the way they want it to. A 100% controlled internet is pointless to 80% of the current users.
