MFTA - do you live in Mauritius (lucky you if so) or are you travelling there on holiday?

Mauritius is supposed to have countrywide wi-fi (search google for mauritius wifi and you'll see the news stories). So in theory you should be able to set up a new wireless connection on your PSP and let it scan for networks.

If you live in Mauritius, then you can do the above, but the better option would be to do as mrgooey suggests (i.e. get a wireless router for your internet connection).

Hmm yeah to be honest I'd be surprised if you managed to get free wifi. I don't know of any country in the world that offers free internet access yet.

ok, my understanding (regardless where you live) is that, IF wifi survice is available say..ummm starbucks for instance ....you then, can use the service. So ONLY, somewhere that offers the service...OR you pick it up.....as you are in 'range' of a wifi enabled area.

at home.....the only way your going to get wifi....is YES, via a router....connected to your modem. The router provides the wifi thoughout your home...to various other items such as a lappy, another comp or a psp etc., that! 'CAN' be used, via wifi.

So again, regardless where you are....thats the only way thats gonna happen. Then........you simply access the service via the browser in you psp. BUUUUUT......yes.....you do have to ensure your psp is enabled to p/u this service. that is done, via the Network Settings on your psp. Use your manual that came with the psp, to learn how to access the available wifi service, either at home or away. READ carefully....follow step by step...and frankly its very easy to do. I had never tried a psp for ANY reason before two months ago. I found the instuction for this procedure, extreamly easy...and well explined. Once you have done this.......your ready to go to Network>Internet Browser. Internet!!! ta da! lol.

Good luck :)

Taiwan, Dubai, several cities across the Europe (namely, my hometown), all major parks in NYC, etc... :-)

So, if Mauritius has free WiFi/WLAN access (the news stories were from 2005/2006 and I couldn't find any info whether the plans were ever rolled out) you don't need to much:

PSP Setup

1 Turn your PSP on if you haven't already.

2 Ensure that your WLAN switch is turned on.

3 Perform a factory reset. In order to do this, select "Settings", then select "Restore Default Settings". You will not lose any information or data by performing this step. However, you may need to reset your wallpapers. Set your name, date, time, etc.

4 Power down your PSP. Wait 10 seconds, then power it on.

5 Navigate to "Network Settings".

6 Select "Infrastructure Mode"

7 Select "New Connection" Name this connection as you deem appropriate.

8 Navigate to "WLAN Settings" Select "Scan".

9 Your Net connection should now be listed. If it is, proceed to step 10. If it is not, and you followed all of the steps so far, then it is likely that you don't have WiFi available at the location you're trying it at.

10 Navigate to "Address Settings". Select "Easy"

11 Navigate to "Setting List". Verify that your settings are correct.

12 Navigate to the next screen and press X to save your settings. You should get a message that says "Save Completed. Test Connection". Press X.

13 You should get two quick display messages. The first should say "connecting to access point." The next should say "obtaining IP address".

I was aware that in some city centres there is free wifi, but I didn't think there was complete and free coverage for everyone in their own homes (which I think is where MFTA wants it)? Very cool if so - I'll be moving to your hometown! ;-)

The news stories I saw said there would be complete wifi access rolled out, but didn't say that it would be free. Plus as you say, the news stories are from a while ago and recent info is a little sketchy.

Yep, 80% of my hometown's population is now covered by 1000+ hotspots, provided by city and sponsoring local businesses. Sure, it doesn't support any level of WLAN security, so its not suitable for business use, etc, but quite nice anyway if you're on a shoestring budget and don't mind the relatively slow connection (about 1Mbps effective rate).

But ye, hopefully MFTA can sort it out. If Mauritius doesn't have the WLAN coverage, you need to do as advised before -- buy a WiFi router and plug it to your ADSL/cable modem and follow the instructions after that.

Ah you're in Finland - so on top of free wifi you also get a fantastically fast broadband network!

Here in the UK our broadband speeds are pitiful. Average ADSL speeds are about 3Mbps. Cable broadband is better but not up to your standards. A decent fibre network still looks a long way off.

/is v.jealous :-)

P.S. Sorry for going off-topic!

Well, it really depends where you live. In all larger cities, yes, you can get 24/3 ADSL2+ or 10/10 VDSL for 50-60 euros per month and we don't have any monthly caps on any of the connections. As far as fibre goes, they do roll it out to larger apartment block buildings now, with 100/10 being the typical connection, but that usually covers only city centres and new developments -- we're couple of years behind our neighbours in Sweden where govt is subsidizing the cost of rolling out fiber across the country. But in rural areas in Finland, you're lucky if you get 512/512 for 70 euros :-)

Used to live in the UK in early noughties, had Telewest 2/1 back then, no complains .. I think it was the only reasonably priced broadband in London with no caps back then, which is why chose it :-)

And don't be jealous. I miss good selection of proper restaurants, the fact that I met people from 20 different nations on daily basis, etc. (whereas I don't exactly miss 2-bad apartments costing £500,000+, the fact that you could never really tell whether the Tube is going to be on time or be delayed by three hours, etc ;-) Each country/city has its good/bad sides :-)

MFTA - you can probably skip that step and start at point 4 to be honest.
