Convert from AVI to Mpeg2

I converted an AVI (size 369MB) to a Mpeg2 (size 1.46 Gig)
using Boilsoft AVI to VCD/SVCD/DVD converter.
I will Burn a DVD from the Mpeg2.
The Mpeg2 has a larger and much clearer picture.
Am I converting these files for nothing?
Instead of Converting to Mprg 2, If I just burned the original AVI to DVD, would the quality of the DVD be just as good??
