Rip all files off DVD. Then when you want to view movie in PowerDVD for example choose select source, DVD file on hard drive and select the VIDEO_TS.IFO file for the movie and it will be loaded to the player

Note: Just use a program like dvd decryptor to rip the files to your H.D.

If you want to keep copies you'll run out of HD space pretty quickly with only 30gig (you'll need maybe 5gig per movie), but if you just want to copy a rented DVD short-term so you can return it on time, this is the way to go. :-)

If you want to keep permanent copies, you'll want to compress them after ripping, in which case follow the many guides on DVD->divx conversion which can be found here and elsewhere.

I'm a newbie to this as well. I wanted to rip a few of my DVDs to my laptop's HD (plenty of room for temporary viewing) so that I have something to watch on the airplane/train on my upcoming vacation.

I got DVDDecrypter and ran it on Lord of the Rings. It appeared to rip the DVD fine to a folder on my HD called FELLOWSHIP with the usual VIDEO_TS folder in it.

I pointed my WinDVD player to it but it wouldn't play it - I also did the subsr thing where I made it a drive X: and it still wouldn't load. I did manage to finally get it to work by simply doing the playlist thing on the trial WinDVD 4.0. Is this the only way to get it to work?

Couple problems. No audio and no subtitles. I'm hard of hearing so I need the subtitles.

What's the best, easiest way to do all this for a newbie?

Appreciate any help.

I hope someone can help. I am in the process of having a very large home based network installed in my new home. Part of my network will be dedicated to saving all my DVD's (present and future). At present I have over 200 DVD's. I need help to both copy all my DVD's to my main drives (without compression), and be able to view them over a network. The ultimate purpose is to be able to watch any of my DVD's in any room, at any time. They will ultimately be sent to either a TV, or monitor. I REALLY NEED HELP! Also, I am aware of the extremely large storage space which will be required. Thanks in advance, Todd
