I've been using WXP Pro on my new PC (about a year old)for awhile now and I decided to do a clean format and OS re-install a week ago. I'd been dreading installing all my codecs because I'm partial to Media Player 10 (the OS comes with 9.. DON'T like 11) and I've always gone the "individual" route (i.e. "standalones") getting each one from the original developers as in DivX from the DivX site, the original XviD one, Matroska from them.. etc. Needless to say.. especially after you add in the subtitle codecs.. it becomes quite the PITA as conflicts crop up and configuration gets more complicated (I'm by no means an expert at any of this.).

So today.. after finally upgrading to MP10 (I missed my DivX vids for about a week) I decided to go with one of the "all-in-one" solutions and chose Klite Full. Installation went without a hitch and I was delighted to test out my two most common formats (avi-XviD and MKV) and saw that they worked fine.. including subtitles!

Next I popped in a retail DVD movie.. expecting nothing to happen since as I recalled.. the older Media Players didn't have a DVD codec built in and I didn't really see any mention of it being installed in Klite (makes sense since I thought DVD codecs had to be bought).

Much to my surprise the DVD played.. but the quality is disappointing. I have no idea where that came from. So.. onto my question..

I bought the Nvidia PureVideo codec years back (not the new HD one) because it works with my 7600GT cards (in SLI) from nVidia.. I have an nForce based mobo.. and it works on MP10. The quality is much sharper than whatever I currently have installed. The question is simple.. Can I just install my Pure Video codec in XP and will it present problems.. WITHOUT trying to hunt down and uninstall whatever is there now? Especially since I see no mention of it anywhere (even in the Klite UI), nor know where it even is coming from? Didn't Microsoft just start including a built-in DVD codec with MP11?

Thanks to all for your time & attention.

Hello, as far as I know, WMP 11 does not include a DVD decoder.

In general, installing a second DVD decoder wont hurt. The one that
gets used depends on the codecs priority (the "merit" value) which
is stored in the registry.
