Hello all,

I have a NTSC Wii with an official Wiikey installed. For the past 9 months, it?s been disconnected. I purchased Super Mario Galaxy NTSC last week but before playing it, did a lot of reading. Since there?s been issues with SMG installing an unfriendly Wiikey update, I was weary about the situation, but since I came across a very long post mentioning update 1.9S and that things should be fine, I was relieved.

My Wiikey came with version 1.9, I think (or whatever was the most recent Wiikey update available in August 2007). I downloaded Wiikey update 1.9S, padded the image, recorded to a TDK DVD-R at 4x, and then ran the update twice; first the test phase, then the actual flash phase. It updated successfully, so then I inserted SMG, and it ran it?s own update, which was successful. SMG loaded up fine, I played it for a few hours. Things were fine, or so it seemed.

The next day, I played SMG some more and things were fine once again. Last night, I decided to play some SMG again, but I received the ?unable to read disc? message. The disc was never removed since I first used it. I tried several other Wii games, both backups and originals, but the same message appeared each time. I even tried several original GC discs, same message. (All my games are NTS btw)

The Wii hasn?t been dropped, nor exposed to water or excessive amounts of dust, etc. Last August, my Wii was originally laying horizontally while playing it, but since I?ve started playing it again, it?s been laying vertically. I tried both positions since I?ve had this disc reading issue, but to no avail. What is going on here? Is this Wiikey related or bad lens/motor assembly or something else?

I hope my Wii isn't out of commission permanently.

Thanks in advance for your responses/thoughts/ideas

The fact that it worked ok for a couple of days and that you get a cannot read disc error would seem to suggest some form of laser error. Possibly dirty, possibly something else, doesn't sound like a chip issue.

Leaving the disc in the system has nothing to do with it, I always leave a disk in the drive and so do most of the people I know.

Thanks for the replies guys. Regarding the possible lens issue, I failed to mention that I used one of those cleaning discs containing the fine bristles, but didn't do the trick; it was a Memorex brand lens cleaner. Maybe there's a better heavy duty brand or type than this?

I don't have a triwing screwdriver to take the unit apart, but someone mentioned using a torx #4 screwdriver as a substitute, are these widely available at main hardware stores, or are they special orders? Even if I manage to open the unit, I'm not sure what I'm looking for.
