Hi guys I was under the impression that all Wii rips should be the full dvd size e.g 4.37 gb. (single layer of course) but i recently backed up my copy of Mercury Meltdown and it comes in at 4.13 gb. I was pretty sure that all rips are supposed to be 4.37 i have played the back up copy of MM and it works fine can anyone advise why the different image size and how much variation it too much.

Glad i didn't just keep ripping it thinking there was a problem

I did some more reading and here is what i found on Nintendo Blog...
[color=red]
Nintendo Wii ISO size: 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes).Nintendo Gamecube ISO size: 1.35 GB (1,459,978,240 bytes)

All Nintendo Wii and Gamecube images will be this exact byte size. If your Wii image is off by any then you have a bad dump and need to try again.

and again from Nintendo Scene.....

Once you've dumped the game to a file you must verify it's size. All Wii game images are exactly the same size and all GC game images are exactly the same size. Check the file properties and ensure the file size is as follows:

* Wii iso size: 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes)
* Gamecube iso size: 1.35 GB (1,459,978,240 bytes)

If the .iso file is not the size listed above there was likely a problem with the dump and it must be done again.

SO I am still confused all the games i backed up were Pal Australian Versions all came out at 4.37 GB (4,699,979,776 bytes) except Mercury Meltdown which is 4.13 GB (4,437,364,486 bytes)

Guess what just did super paper mario and it comes in at 4.21 GB (4,527,050,752 bytes)

Now i am totally confused these are all Pal Australian and all new. Can anyone advise why the different sizes since everyone else is saying all wii games must be 4.37

You say playing the backup works so its obviously not a problem, but every game I have comes in at 4,699,979,776 bytes so not sure whats going on.

What are you using to dump the games ?

Following the instruction set out here, using rawdump, fri dump for ssbb and then burning using image burn on 2.4 speed all other default settings.

I really cannot understand how something so precise can be so imprecise. I have looked at torrent sites and also noticed that Wii files that are rated as good by many, come in a variety of sizes although i have not downloaded any of them, i tried downloading word templates a while back and got a nest of trojans for my trouble.

SO any other suggestions as to the size issues would be helpful

The reason you see torrents of different sizes is because they are generally compressed, which lowers the size somewhat. And if they're scrubbed before compressing it can drastically lower the filesize of the torrent. However, once they're unzipped they'll all still be 4,699,979,776 bytes.

The only wii games I've ever seen that aren't that specific size are some that have been truncha signed. But if you're ripping them yourself that shouldn't be an issue. I really have no idea what the problem you're having could possibility be. Sorry

Thanks for that I was thinking about compression and i could see how a rar or zip file would be that way but i ripped mine with raw dump to iso so it should be exact?

Rawdump to .iso from an original should be

4,699,979,776 bytes
4,589,824 KB

Rawdump to .iso from a burnt Image

4,700,307,456
4,590,144 KB

I've never seen numbers for a single layer USA NTSC game other than those above.

what about dual layer frii dump ssbb mine comes out at 7.89 GB (8,482,783,232 bytes) or 8,283,968kb and works perfectly while others say it should be larger.

Any thoughts

I've downloaded alot of the custom tracked guitar hero versions and none of them work but my back up copy of guitar hero 3 works fine. Some of the custom ones are the exact size and some are not. I'm not sure what the problem is.

The custom track ones are all truncha signed, so they wont work if you have wii firmware 3.3 unless you load them through gecko os.
