MC Exploit w/USB HD still possible w/ my ps2?

I have a modded FAT ps2 whose laser died (it can read CD's including CD-R's) I assumed that the system no longer had any use without replacing the laser so anyway I stumble on this forum and see the new MC Exploit and think I can use it but I am super confused I do not even know if I have everything possible to run the latest exploit.

This is what I have
USB Memory stick
iPod (planned on using for the USB HDD not sure if its possible)
2 ps2 memory cards
network adapter

theoretically I should be able to do everything to in the tutorials to boot games off the iPod (USB HDD) but I do not know where to start or even if it is possible. I know in order to run the hack you need to have a means of booting homebrew this is where I get confused. Why? I am pretty sure that I have no way of doing this maybe that is why I do not get it.

Because I have the network adapter is there another route I can take with the items I have that would be easier than the MC exploit
