Does anyone here purchase Prodisc 8x thermal printable discs, also referred to as clear coat? I've been using them for some time now and not a single failure, but a newer batch code has been problematic. I was wondering if anyone had a similar situation... Prodisc doesn't seem to be very popular, but I've found them to be normally excellent; better than Ridata and about the same price.

Is your burner's firmware up to date? If the discs are newer, the burner may not know how to burn them!

Run dvd identifier on one of your successful burns, and on one of the new ones.
Post the info as i'm curious as to what they code out as.
Garmoon is right, may be time to check for a firmware update.

Same here.. They always seem poor, not quite in the cmc camp, but close.

These aren't Fujifilm, they code out as ProdiscF01 and both batches are the same media ID. I got some more of them this weekend and they now seem fine again.. I think it was just a bad batch. I checked the batch code and the bad ones were 8035F07XX and the new ones are 8126F04XX, which is much further down. The bad ones were sent back to the distro and I'm waiting for replacements, so no big deal. My drive can burn them fine without a firmware update, as it is a 16x drive but I prefer 8x media as they are cheaper and seem more reliable. I've had great success with Prodisc "Spin-X" media (no failures at all) in the past, and they don't degrade like Riteks do, so I really don't know why people bad mouth them.

Well reason I don't use prodiscs, is the fact that I have never gotten a spindle of defective discs from Sony (TY), Verbatim, Office Depot (ritek or ricohjpn), or even a few CMC mags.
But if they are good for you, do what works. How long have you been burning DVDs and have you tried to copy the oldest ones you have? That'll tell you how good they are.

We have been watching this brand for years.. results are mixed. I would say avoid because of the obviously variable quality. Likely to be B grade media from various sources .. reprints reported under both fuji and prodisk brand. Also seen as datawrite, asda, tuffdisk (where you could see the fuji print under the tuffdisk paint) and maxell branded media. These disks turn up everywhere poor quality media is sold.. supermarket and clearance store specials.. I prefer cmc because at least they are consistent in the badness XD

The correct listing for these is the following:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/prodisc-dvd-r-prodiscf01-8/2168
They are not Fujifilm, as I've said.. they're made BY Prodisc and carry a ProdiscF01 media code. Like I said, I've had no problems at all before and then it seemed a bad batch made it out... considering they cost about $.25 each I can't complain too much.

you can buy the best media in the world (Taiyo Yuden) for the same price (25 cents) or less. so keep that in mind next time you need blank media

The "F" in the Prodisc media code stands for "Fuji." These discs use Fuji's Oxonol dye. This dye requires slightly greater laser power levels than other dyes but early environmental tests suggest that the power price may be worth it--discs recorded with this dye showed impressive stability in heat/humidity tests.
Variable results may be due to variations in drives' abilities to handle the extra power requirements as well as to compatibility issues. It may be worth recording at slower speeds such as 8X or 4X to relieve the diode from having to apply so much power during recording. (Slower recording speeds require less power output.)
When a disc is overlabeled, it is possibly because either the original buyer did not require the extra inventory or because the original buyer rejected it and it was sold off as B-grade. The only way to tell is to test the disc on a drive that is compatible with it.
