So I have a disc drive here. When it comes to playing games it starts to spin up, then stop. Then says open disc tray. It does this to backups and originals. However if I put in a dvd movie, it plays it just fine. I tried cleaning the lens with a cototn ball, q tip, no good. So what do I do to get this thing playing games? Thanks.
The dvd drive key has to match your motherboard or you will end up with a movie player. If the key is present on the dvd drive you have and it wasn't properly flashed right you will have to replace it.By the way if you swap it out with a different type of drive such as a Hitachi for a Benq or Samsung MS drive as an example or vice versa then you have to spoof the firmware in order for it to recognize the drive. If you get the open tray error message then one of the ribbons aren't connected right or if the drive laser has been moved a little bit it will need calibration. There could be multiple reasons why this is happening to you,but if you could explain in more details about your drive as in what you did to it I could probably help you out. Here are some questions that I would like to ask you such as:
The dvd drive you have is this the original drive that came with your Xbox 360?
If it is the original dvd drive have you checked all the ribbon cables to make sure they are connected, and has your laser been moved at all meaning knocked out of alignment?
If it isn't the original drive that came with your Xbox 360 what type of drive was the original and what was it replaced with?
Do you have the dvd drive key for your Xbox 360 so you can replace it with another Xbox 360 dvd drive?
These are just some questions I have to ask, because it might be an alignment issue or it could be something completely different that is causing this issue.
Alright, heres the thing. Im doing this for a friend. What happened was is that he sent his 360 to some guy to be sent in for repair/flashing. What the guy did was take out my friends case/shell and put it on a completely different motherbaord my friend had. Now the guy isnt answering phone calls/emails/ etc. So I have no info on this 360. When my friend got it back it was like that with this issue. it's supposed to be flashed.. who knows though. Though I did put in a backup and once it said to play this 360 game put it in a 360 console.
How can I tell if it was the laser? Can I still get the dvd drive key?
The person whoever it was swapped out the guts of your friends Xbox 360 with dvd drive and motherboard set that don't match each other. It is probably a motherboard with a non matching dvd drive which means your friend has a dvd player now.If you know this person then ask for a refund or tell him to give you back the guts he replaced as this a scheme he is playing on you and your friend. The dvd drive and the motherboard have a specific key that has to match each other. If they don't match each other then the Xbox 360 will not play any games only movies.Sorry there is nothing that can be done to fix this issue only solution you can do is to get the original guts back or a full refund from the person that swapped them out.Best of luck sorting out your problem, and we all learn the hard way sometimes just try to be cautious when dealing with someone shady like that again.I would help you out,but there is really nothing much I can do in the state it is in sorry.

Thanks. Update though:
I went ahead and flashed the drive. Now I still have a dvd player. But no more open tray errors. It just takes me directly to the "insert this 360 game into a 360 to play". And the disc continues spinning, it doesnt stop.
