I am trying to update from firmware 2.36 to 2.42 but everytime i get to 60% i get the error 8002f997...data corrupt. i have tried with wired and wireless network and also by putting the update on a thumb drive and installing form there. always the same problem at 60%. Called sony and the guy didnt even listen to what im saying. Just said..send it to us and its $149 to fix it. i dont really care about the new firmware update but i cant get online with my ps3 till i get it to update. was just wondering if anyone else had these problems and if so how they fixed it.. thanks all in advance

8002F997 - Can not update XMB firmware

try updating to 2.40 then 2.41, update from a usb stick or card.
http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/system-software/
then update through removable media to 2.42.

if that doesnt work then back up your data, format the harddrive and update straight to 2.42

thanks :) any idea where i can get 2.40 from? i have the other 2 but cant find that one..maybe cuz sony pulled it?
