"Romeo" Mod Question

Hello - I'm in the process of modding my PS2 (v10) and figured I should try and do the romeo mod so my laser doesn't die out. However...most of the tutorials I have seen have listed SCPH50002 and up to be the problem systems. My PS2 happens to be a v10 SCPH50001 and I was wondering if it was wise to attempt the Romeo modification or if I should settle with cleaning the lens. Any advice would be appreciated - thanks!
