Obviously the different burners can result in different quality for burning. However, I am wondering if quality can be affected by the different burners. I have been using my external Plextor drive for ripping. However, I may begin using my internal drive (Dell Laptop) if quality is the same either way. Depending on the drives, I know speed can be different for burning and ripping.

Basically I am going on a trip and want to rip some DVDs when I have time but I don't want to haul around the burner if I can avoid it.

Your internal burner can handle some burning, but they have a shorter lifespan than desktop or external burners and can be expensive to replace.

I am still going to burn with the external Plextor regardless. This thread is only inquiring about ripping. I am sure the same thing applies though, that it is easier to burn out the internal drive no matter how it is being used. Will the quality of the internal burner produce the same quality rips as the external Plextor?

Yeah they should. I don't see any difference on the rips from my Acer laptop (with factory dvd/rw) with my desktop (old had lite-on and new has samsung).

The ripping should be the same, and as rtm27 says, laptop burners/roms are much more fragile and should be used only occassionally. The external burners are much more ruggedly built and can last the long haul.
