Capturing VHS or DVD to SVCD or?

Hi,

I need some guidance in this process if possible.

I have some experience in that I have used XP, Windows Movie Maker, and Roxio software (I have all of those on my computer at the present) to make "memory videos" with still images, music.

However, what I want to do now is convert some reels of very old home movies from my in-laws. I want to eventually give this as a gift (edited with music, chapters, etc, if possible).

I have considered sending to be professionally transferred to VHS (which is the cheapest option) or to DVD (with no extras). Then taking one of these formats and transferring to my computer so I can edit it like I want.

What would be your suggestions on the best way to do this, and what other hardware/software do I need to accomplish this?

What kind of tapes do you want to transfer? If they're MiniDV or Digital8 that would simplify things a bit for you because all you would need is a firewire cable and a firewire input on your computer. If they're Hi8 or VHS-C then you're going to need a capture card for your computer. In the software department you will need something like Ulead DVD Movie Factory to add music and create menus, assuming you have a DVD burner to write with.
